In the Philippines, participants waved glow-sticks as the lights were dimmed. In Paris they cheered as the Eiffel Tower went dark. Time zone by time zone nearly 4 thousand cities and towns in 88 countries joined the event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to dim nonessential lights for sixty minutes to send a message about the environment.
“Tonight for the first time hundreds of millions of people around the world have had a chance to speak out to voice their concerns about climate change and tonight we'll send a very powerful signal to leaders everywhere that the time has come to confront this problem and to solve it.”
China participated for the first time cutting the lights at two of the most prominent venues at last year's Olympcs including the Bird's Nest Stadium. Lights on Athens ancient Acropolis dimmed as did lights on Rome's Colesium. Organizers initially worried enthusiasms would wane with the world focused on the global economic crisis. But Earth Hour's executive director said it apparently had the opposite effect.
